Atlit--Jewish Internment Camp

We concluded the day with a short visit to Atlit—a former detention compound of Jewish immigrants who arrived in Israel illegally during the British Mandate period. Imagine, surviving the holocaust, going over land and by sea to Israel, only to be rounded up once more, separated from family members, and forced into barbed wire enclosed camps. This was a black period for relations between the Jews and the British. In 1914 Lord Balfour declared support for Jewish settlement in Palestine. But with the infamous White Paper the British reduced Jewish immigrants coming to Israel to 15,000 per year. Some immigrants remained in the camp for 5 years.
