Sunday, March 15 -- Acco

We left Haifa early taking the time to view once more the impressive port. Here Israel's Navy is based. Their submarines ply the mediterranean. We were pleased to learn that the submarines are nuclear capable. They serve as a deterrent to Iran's threat of nuclear attack. Because they are constantly on the move, they are ready for any attack on Israel's soil. When you are surrounded by enemies, you are always ready.
Our first stop was the town of Acco, an important ancient port and prison site since the Turkish ottoman empire. In modernity, the prison compound was used by the British to house Hagana and Igun during Israel's fight for independence. Some were excited here and this site serves as a memorial--independence did not come without a price, and it did not come quickly or without careful planning.
