We drove to the ancient town of Safed, and to the ancient synagogue--500 years of continuous prayers and study in this building. Here the rabbi studied and wrote the book 500 years ago that lists the 613 mitzvot and how to keep them--the holy book still in use today.
Just outside the synagogue are alleyways filled with artists and their goods. This was the alley Stu and I tried to find during our first trip to Safed two weeks before. Now we learned we were only one short flight of steps away from the artist gallery we were seeking.
The town is amazing. The site of the study of the Kaballah, home to the ultra orthodoz from many sects, and the location of wonderful Judaica. We purchased a piece of art from Levy, and had our picture taken with the artists. One style developed here is that of micro-calligraphy using quotations from the bible. On a single painting the entire book of Genesis might be written within the picture. Truly a site worth returning to, our visit was much too short.
